The GRE is an important part of the graduate school application process, and this test is used in admissions decisions for graduate, business, and law school programs around the world. The GRE General Test is designed to closely reflect the sort of thinking employees and executives are required to perform in today's fast-paced business environments. The exam assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing abilities, intentionally focusing on skills that have been developed and strengthened over a long period of time and can be applied to vastly different jobs and positions. GRE scores range between 130 to 170 in the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam, and the writing portion is scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 6 using half-point increments. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking graduate programs, it is imperative to do well on the GRE. An average total GRE score is around 300, but for those seeking admission to the world's best graduate, business, or law programs, scores will need to be far above average. A score of 318 at the 75th percentile is considered "good," whereas a score of 329 at the 90th percentile is considered "excellent." At Manhattan Review, we can help you obtain those excellent scores and take the next step in your academic and/or professional life.

GRE Prep Course Honolulu - Photo of Student Tamara

I would like to let you know that I took the GRE on Monday, December 6th and earned a score of 1200 (600 verbal, 600 quantitative). I think that I did very well on the essay portion of the test as well but won't receive those scores in the mail for a couple weeks or so. I would like to thank my instructor (George S.) and Manhattan Review for helping me to increase my score so much (I got a 1050 the first time I took the GRE in 2002) Thank you very much.

Meet a Honolulu GRE Tutor: Ben R.

Ben R. has enjoyed working with children for as long as he can remember, and from an early age, he found himself drawn to the field of medicine, liking the process of administering a test, gathering data, arriving at a diagnosis, and applying a prescription or other form of treatment. "My younger brother was diagnosed with dyscalculia in middle school," he shares, "and even though the entire family was relieved when we knew what was going on, I just kept thinking how much easier my brother's life would have been if we'd known how to help him in school sooner." Ben hated seeing his younger brother cry over math homework, and "watching him suffer and think he was stupid was terrible and made me want to dedicate my life to finding ways to alleviate others' suffering." Ben completed his undergraduate degree in psychology from Texas A&M University and knew he wanted to continue his academic and professional journey by obtaining a doctorate degree. "I didn't mind being in school for a few more years, because I've always loved learning," he admits. "Books and facts make me happy, because the more I know, the better equipped I am to make a difference."

Given that attending a doctorate program meant taking the GRE, Ben began asking friends and family members for recommendations on the best test prep services in the area. He ultimately enrolled in a classroom-style group course that meet weekly, in addition to scheduling a few sessions with a private tutor "just to focus a little more on a few aspects of the exam that were particularly challenging for me." Ben is happy to share how much he benefitted from his preparation work, appreciating the consistent study schedule, as well as the chance to take practice exams, receive feedback, and learn how to best manage his time. "Really coming to understand the GRE inside and out took away almost all of my test-related anxiety," Ben smiles. "Once I knew I could use certain strategies and techniques, it almost became like a game, figuring out the answers to questions." Ben took preparing for the GRE very seriously, and his hard work was rewarded when he achieved an impressive score that placed him in the upper percentile of test-takers. Combined with his strong undergraduate work and a well-written essay, Ben's GRE score played a significant role in helping him craft a commanding graduate school application. Ben was accepted at his top three doctorate programs, and he ultimately chose to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, respected around the world for producing leaders in the field of behavioral medicine.

After graduating from UNC, Ben completed internships and fellowships and was ultimately offered a position with a company that specialized in diagnosing childhood learning differences. The company was located in Honolulu, and while Ben had never imagined living on the island of Oahu, he was overjoyed to experience living in a dream locale. Ben had done a significant amount of student teaching during his doctorate program and found that as much as he enjoyed working with children, he also missed helping older students prepare for their own academic successes. He regularly led workshops and taught online courses for continuing education credits, but he liked the idea of working with future professionals and setting them up for their own successful careers where they could be leaders in their respective fields. When Ben learned Manhattan Review had an office in Honolulu, he reached out about helping students prepare for the GRE, as he had done, and we were thrilled to welcome him to the team. When Ben isn't guiding students to their own graduate-level success, he can be found rock climbing at the Mokule'ia Wall, volunteering on the weekends with a local beach clean-up group, and learning to play the ukulele.
