The GRE is an important part of the graduate school application process, and this test is used in admissions decisions for graduate, business, and law school programs around the world. The GRE General Test is designed to closely reflect the sort of thinking employees and executives are required to perform in today's fast-paced business environments. The exam assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing abilities, intentionally focusing on skills that have been developed and strengthened over a long period of time and can be applied to vastly different jobs and positions. GRE scores range between 130 to 170 in the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam, and the writing portion is scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 6 using half-point increments. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking graduate programs, it is imperative to do well on the GRE. An average total GRE score is around 300, but for those seeking admission to the world's best graduate, business, or law programs, scores will need to be far above average. A score of 318 at the 75th percentile is considered "good," whereas a score of 329 at the 90th percentile is considered "excellent." At Manhattan Review, we can help you obtain those excellent scores and take the next step in your academic and/or professional life.

GRE Prep Course Berkeley - Photo of Student Tamara

I would like to let you know that I took the GRE on Monday, December 6th and earned a score of 1200 (600 verbal, 600 quantitative). I think that I did very well on the essay portion of the test as well but won't receive those scores in the mail for a couple weeks or so. I would like to thank my instructor (George S.) and Manhattan Review for helping me to increase my score so much (I got a 1050 the first time I took the GRE in 2002) Thank you very much.

Meet a Berkeley GRE Tutor: Megan F.

Megan has always had a heart for working with children, and from a very early age, she found herself drawn to the medical field, liking the idea of administering tests, arriving at a diagnosis, and offering a prescription or other treatment to reduce suffering. "My older sister was diagnosed with dyscalculia—difficulty with numbers and math—in middle school, and my family was so relieved to have a diagnosis but at the same time, I remember thinking how much easier school would have been for her if we'd known about this earlier." Megan completed her undergraduate degree in psychology from The Ohio State University and knew she wanted to continue her academic journey by obtaining a doctoral degree. "You really need an advanced degree to do anything with psychology," she shares, "and I didn't mind being in school a few years longer, since I've always loved learning."

Knowing that she would need to take the GRE, Megan began asking friends for standardized test prep recommendations, and she ultimately enrolled in a classroom-style group course that provided a consistent study schedule, as well as the opportunity to take numerous practice exams and learn about her own test-taking tendencies. "I learned so much, not only about the GRE, but about how to identify test questions so I could apply the best strategy and arrive at the correct answer and how to pace myself on the exam, so I didn't run out of time," recalls Megan. Megan took preparing for the GRE very seriously, and her dedication and persistence paid off when she ultimately achieved an impressively high score that put her in the upper percentile of test takers. Combined with her strong undergraduate work and a well-written essay, Megan's GRE score played an important role in helping her create a strong graduate program application. Megan was accepted into her top five doctoral programs for psychology, and she ultimately chose to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a program respected around the world for producing high-achieving leaders in the field of psychology.

After graduating from UNC, Megan completed internships and fellowships and was ultimately offered a position with a company that specialized in diagnosing childhood learning differences. The company was located in Berkeley, and while Megan had never lived on the West Coast before, she was excited to expand her horizons and try something new. Megan had done a significant amount of student teaching during her doctorate program and found that she missed working with students and helping them prepare for their own individual successes. She regularly led weekend workshops and taught online courses for continuing education credits, but she missed the energy of working with future professionals and watching them master concepts. When she learned Manhattan Review had an office in the area, she reached out about possibly helping students prepare for the GRE, and we were thrilled to welcome her to our team. When Megan isn't guiding students to their own graduate-level success, she can be found learning to make ceramic pottery at her friend's studio, running in the morning with her adopted Greyhound, and participating in local spoken word and poetry events around town.
