Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their full potential in a group setting. These students might find themselves distracted by others or overcome with worry about working too slowly, holding the group back and slowing down the pace of learning. Alternatively, these students might find themselves bored and frustrated attempting to learn complex material in a group setting, particularly when they have mastered a certain concept but cannot move on to something new until the rest of the group has demonstrated similar progress. The GRE General Test is designed to closely reflect the sort of thinking employees and executives are required to perform in today's fast-paced business environments. The exam assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing abilities, intentionally focusing on skills that have been developed and strengthened over a long period of time and can be applied to vastly different jobs and positions. GRE scores range between 130 to 170 in the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam, and the writing portion is scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 6 using half-point increments. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking graduate programs, it is imperative to do well on the GRE. An average total GRE score is around 300, but for those seeking admission to the world's best graduate, business, or law programs, scores will need to be far above average. A score of 318 at the 75th percentile is considered "good," whereas a score of 329 at the 90th percentile is considered "excellent." At Manhattan Review, we can help you obtain those excellent scores and take the next step in your academic and/or professional life.

Meet a Honolulu GRE Tutor: Lisa P.

Lisa P. grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and spent her childhood dreaming of two things: someday living near the ocean and having a career that involved taking care of animals. "I've always been such a huge animal lover," she shares with a smile. "Growing up, I took in every animal my friends got for Christmas or their birthday and then decided they didn't want. I adopted quite a few stray cats, too, and thankfully my mother was very supportive." Lisa worked hard during high school, taking advanced placement and honors science courses, organizing fund raisers for various animal welfare organizations, and participating in Math Club, varsity track, and student government. In her spare time, she volunteered at a local vet clinic, learning all she could about providing medical care to a wide variety of small and large animals alike. Lisa's school offered an ACT prep course, and in addition to that, Lisa also worked with a private tutor "just to make sure I was completely prepared and knew how to pace myself over the exam." Lisa's dedication paid off when she obtained an impressively high ACT score and, combined with her grades and other accomplishments, this earned her offers of admission from colleges across the United States. While it wasn't near an ocean, she chose to attend the University of Wisconsin at Madison, respected for their strong biology program, which she knew would prepare her to eventually obtain a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine.

During her undergrad, Lisa worked as a tutor in her university's learning lab, helping others grasp subjects like chemistry and biology that came easily to her, and she was surprised at how much she enjoyed teaching others and helping them master difficult concepts. When it came time to apply to graduate programs specializing in veterinary medicine, Lisa worked diligently with a private tutor through Manhattan Review, appreciating that she and her tutor could meet virtually around her busy schedule. She approached the GRE with the same dedication and perseverance she'd used to prepare for the ACT, and thanks to her hard work, Lisa scored in the highest percentile on the exam, earning herself offers of admission from leading veterinary programs. She ultimately chose to attend the University of California at Davis, consistently ranked by U.S. World News & Report as one of the top five veterinary medicine programs in the world. After graduating with high honors, Lisa was offered a variety of positions, some at private clinics and some in public settings, but when she received an offer of employment from the Honolulu Zoo, she knew it was time to make her dream of living near the ocean come true.

Lisa moved to Honolulu and immediately settled in, loving the work she did with animals. At the same time, she found that she missed working with students and helping them find their own academic successes. "I'd done a lot of student teaching during my vet program," she explains, "in addition to being a tutor during undergrad, and I wanted to help the next generation of grad students make their own marks on the world." Lisa was thrilled to learn Manhattan Review had an office in Honolulu, and she immediately reached out about offering private tutoring sessions to students preparing for the GRE. We were thrilled to welcome her to the team, and Lisa consistently receives glowing reviews from the students who work with her. They appreciate her ability to break big ideas down into more manageable concepts, and they love her ability to use real-life experiences to make even the most challenging content easy to remember. When Lisa isn't caring for her beloved animals or guiding the next generation of graduate school students to personal success, she can be found visiting local wineries, giving talks about animals to elementary school students, and helping to find forever homes for Oahu's feral cats.
