The GRE is an important part of the graduate school application process, and this test is used in admissions decisions for graduate, business, and law school programs around the world. The GRE General Test is designed to closely reflect the sort of thinking employees and executives are required to perform in today's fast-paced business environments. The exam assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing abilities, intentionally focusing on skills that have been developed and strengthened over a long period of time and can be applied to vastly different jobs and positions. GRE scores range between 130 to 170 in the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam, and the writing portion is scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 6 using half-point increments. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking graduate programs, it is imperative to do well on the GRE. An average total GRE score is around 300, but for those seeking admission to the world's best graduate, business, or law programs, scores will need to be far above average. A score of 318 at the 75th percentile is considered "good," whereas a score of 329 at the 90th percentile is considered "excellent." At Manhattan Review, we can help you obtain those excellent scores and take the next step in your academic and/or professional life.

GRE Prep Course Calgary - Photo of Student Sophia

I wanted to thank you for helping me with the GRE prep and let you know that your teaching tactics worked! I took the exam yesterday and got an 800 on the math, 570 on the verbal and who knows about the writing but hopefully it's not below a 4! The verbal is tricky with those silly words but I am happy with my score and ready to walk away from this ETS madness. Thanks again and all the best!

Meet a Calgary GRE Tutor: Alana F.

Alana F. has always had a passion for working with children, and from an early age, she found herself drawn to the field of medicine, liking the idea of administering a test, arriving at a diagnosis, and applying a prescription or other form of treatment. "My younger sister was diagnosed with dyslexia in the fifth grade," she shares, "and even though my family was so relieved when we had an official diagnosis, I just kept thinking how much easier things would have been for my sister if we'd known how to help her in school sooner." Alana credits her younger sister's experience with inspiring her to find ways to alleviate the suffering of others, leading her to pursue an undergraduate degree in psychology at The Ohio State University. Alana knew she wanted to continue her academic journey by obtaining a doctorate degree, "since you really can't do much in psychology without a graduate-level degree. But I didn't mind being in school longer, because I've always loved learning, and I knew an education would enable me to better help others like my sister," shares Alana with a smile.

Given that she would need to take the GRE, Alana enrolled in a classroom-style group course that provided her with a consistent study schedule, as well as the chance to take practice exams and receive important feedback on her time management skills. "Understanding the GRE inside and out took away almost all of my test-related anxiety," Alana says. "Once I knew I could use certain strategies and techniques, it almost became like a game, figuring out the answers to questions." Alana took preparing for the GRE very seriously, and her hard work was rewarded when she achieved an impressive score placing her among the highest scoring test-takers. Combined with her strong undergraduate work and a well-written essay, Alana's GRE score played a significant role in helping her craft a commanding graduate school application. Alana was accepted at her top three doctorate programs, and she ultimately chose to attend the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, respected around the world for producing leaders in the field of behavioral medicine and consistently ranked among the top five graduate programs in psychology by U.S. News & World Report.

After graduating from the University of Michigan, Alana completed internships and fellowships and was ultimately offered a position with a company that specialized in diagnosing childhood learning differences. The company was in the process of opening a new office in Calgary, and Alana was excited to live someplace new. Alana had done a significant amount of student teaching during her doctorate program and while she loved helping younger children succeed in school, she also found that she missed working with older students and helping them prepare for their own individual successes. She regularly led weekend workshops and taught online courses for continuing education credits, but she missed the energy of working with future professionals and watching them master concepts. When Alana learned Manhattan Review had an office in Calgary, she reached out about the possibility of helping students prepare for the GRE, and we were thrilled to welcome her to our team. When Alana isn't guiding students to their own graduate-level success, she can be found attending the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, enjoying potlucks with friends, and visiting local museums to learn more about the national and provincial history of her new home.
