The most recent available statistics on ACT performance for the total group of test-takers indicate that the mean ACT composite score is 21. This mean composite score is the average of sectional scores that range from 20.3 to 21.3, depending on the section. Scores of 27 or above have been classified by ACT as appropriate for highly selective colleges, and an ACT score of 27 is in the 87th percentile of all students taking the ACT. Most universities report the average composite ACT scores for their new students, and the most prestigious institutions have high ACT expectations. These institutions include Carnegie Mellon University (middle-50% ACT scores of 31-34), Columbia University (31-34), Cornell University (30-34), Georgetown University (30-33), and Harvard University (32-35). Approximately 5% of all test-takers receive ACT scores of 30 or higher, and about 1% are at 33 or above. In short, students who wish to gain acceptance to the top universities must receive scores that are significantly above average. Professional ACT instruction is the most reliable way to receive these upper-percentile scores.
