ACT Tutoring in Durban

Are you a Durban-based student seeking to obtain the highest score possible on the ACT? If you are searching for the most effective and comprehensive resources to expedite your preparation, look no further than the test prep professionals at Manhattan Review. In recent years, the ACT has become an increasingly popular test to take when preparing college applications, and in many states the ACT has surpassed the SAT in terms of student preference. When preparing for a test as important as the ACT, many students enjoy learning in the company of their peers, viewing others' questions or comments as insightful or even inspiring. Other students, however, know they do not perform at their best or to their full potential in a group setting. They worry about slowing the group down or holding them back because they need to work at a slower pace or require additional time to grasp a particular concept. Alternatively, these students may experience boredom or frustration once they have mastered a subject but cannot move on until the rest of the group similarly understands the material. If you know you learn best through one-on-one instruction personalized to your unique learning needs, consider working with one of the dedicated and experienced private tutors at Manhattan Review.

The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

Meet a Durban ACT Tutor: Pamela H.

Pamela H. grew up in Billings, Montana, and spent her childhood dreaming of two things: one day living near the ocean and having a career that involved working with animals. "I've always been an animal lover," she smiles. "Growing up, I had a ton of pets, and I was always the person taking in animals other kids got for Christmas then outgrew or decided they didn't want to take care of." Pamela worked exceptionally hard during high school, taking advanced placement and honors science courses, organizing fundraisers for animal welfare and conservation organizations, as well as participating in varsity cross country and the speech and debate team. She also volunteered at a local vet clinic, learning everything she could about providing medical care to a variety of animals. Pamela's school offered a month-long ACT prep course on the weekends, and in addition to this, she also worked with a local private tutor, "just to make sure I knew how to pace myself and didn't get overwhelmed." Pamela's hard work and dedication paid off when she obtained an impressively high ACT score. Combined with her high grades and extracurricular activities, this led to her being offered admission at numerous leading colleges and universities. She ultimately chose to attend the University of Cambridge, respected around the world for a leading biology program, which would prepare her to one day obtain an advanced degree in veterinary medicine.

During her time at Cambridge, Pamela worked as a tutor in the university's learning lab, helping others grasp subjects like chemistry and biology that came easily to her, and she was surprised at how much she enjoyed teaching others and helping them master difficult concepts. When it came time to apply to graduate programs specializing in veterinary medicine, Pamela worked diligently with a private tutor through Manhattan Review, appreciating that she and her tutor could meet virtually around her busy schedule. She approached the GRE with the same dedication and perseverance she'd used to prepare for the ACT, and thanks to her focused preparation, Pamela obtained a very high score that earned her offers of admission from leading veterinary programs. She ultimately chose to attend the University of California at Davis, consistently ranked by U.S. World News & Report as one of the top five veterinary medicine programs in the world. After graduating with high honors, Pamela was offered a variety of positions, some at private clinics and some in public settings, but when she received an offer of employment from uShaka Marine World in Durban, she knew it was time to make her dream of living near the ocean come true.

Pamela moved to Durban and loved the work she did with animals. At the same time, she found that she missed working with students and helping them find their own academic successes. "I'd done a lot of tutoring and student teaching over the course of my schooling," she explains, "and I wanted to help the next generation of students make their own marks on the world." Pamela was thrilled to learn Manhattan Review had an office in Durban, and she immediately reached out about offering private tutoring sessions to help students prepare for the ACT. We were thrilled to welcome her to the team, and Pamela's students consistently note how fortunate they are to work with her. They appreciate her ability to break big ideas down into more manageable concepts, and they love her ability to use real-life experiences to make even the most challenging content easy to remember. When Pamela isn't caring for her beloved animals or guiding the next generation of students to collegiate success, she can be found singing with the Durban Symphonic Choir, giving talks about animals to elementary school students, and helping to find forever homes for dogs and cats at a local shelter.
