The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

Meet a Flushing ACT Tutor: Rachel R.

Rachel R. grew up in the United Kingdom and moved to Washington, DC, when her father accepted a position as an assistant professor at American University. Rachel had always been an avid athlete, competing in track and field, swimming, volleyball and cross country. "Sports helped me make friends after my family moved," she recalls, "and doing something familiar made the transition to the U.S. a little less jarring, even though I had to learn to call football soccer." Rachel loved being part of a team and enjoyed strong friendships across her sports, which led her to considering the idea of someday becoming a personal trainer. "I've always loved cheering people on," she smiles, "and it's so exciting to watch someone work really hard and beat their own personal best record, regardless of the sport."

While Rachel hoped to attend college on an athletic scholarship, she also knew the importance of a high standardized test score. "I was really fortunate to work with a fantastic tutor while preparing for the ACT," she shares. "We treated preparing for the exam just like I would prepare for a tournament…we outlined goals, broke them down into monthly, weekly, and daily prep components, and measured progress along the way, adjusting our focus when I got better at something or spending longer on a subject if I didn't grasp it quite as fast." Rachel's hard work was rewarded with a stellar ACT score, and she was thrilled to be accepted into one of the most prestigious and respected kinesiology programs in the United States at Rice University.

After graduating from Rice University, Rachel was offered a job in the athletic department at a public school near Flushing. Having never lived on the East Coast before, she was excited at the opportunity and again used participating in community sports to make new friends and help her settle in. Rachel was referred to Manhattan Review by a fellow teacher after the teacher observed her helping students with their homework. Rachel immediately accepted the opportunity to help students prepare for the ACT, and she has developed the reputation for being one of the most positive, enthusiastic, and upbeat tutors at Manhattan Review. "I especially love working with student athletes," she says, "so we can use our shared love of sports to create a gameplan designed to lead us to standardized test victory." When Rachel isn't coaching students in sports or the intricacies of test taking, she can be found swimming, leading a women's running group on Saturdays at a local park, and taking yoga classes.
