Are you a Honolulu-based student seeking the highest possible score on the ACT? If you are planning to attend a prestigious college or university and in need of an impressive ACT score, look no further than the standardized test prep experts at Manhattan Review. In recent years, the ACT has become an increasingly popular test to take when preparing college applications, and in many states the ACT has surpassed the SAT in terms of student preference. When it comes to preparing for a test as important as the ACT, many students find that they learn perfectly well in the company of others, viewing their peers' questions or comments as insightful or even inspiring. Other students, however, know they do not perform to their fullest potential in a group setting. They worry about slowing the group down or holding them back because they need to work at a slower pace or require additional time to grasp a particular concept. Alternatively, these students may experience frustration once they have mastered a subject but cannot move on until the rest of the group similarly understands the material. The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

Meet a Honolulu ACT Tutor: Hunter F.

Hunter F. grew up in Boise, Idaho, and credits the long winters with helping him develop an interest in designing websites. "I could only ski or ice skate or go sledding so many times," he recalls with a laugh, "so I spent a lot of time on the computer. From an early age, I was really interested in how websites looked, what made one more interesting than another, and why some sites functioned better than others." Through online video tutorials, books from the local library, and virtual workshops, Hunter began learning how to design and create websites, and when his father asked him to help rebrand his company's landing page, Hunter realized that not only was he good at online design, "I could actually make money from it!" Hunter was a founding member of his small high school's coding club, as well as an active participant in every web-focused design elective or online course he could find time to attend. While Hunter knew he could make a comfortable living creating websites for individuals and companies, he also enjoyed teaching others and worked as a math tutor in his high school's peer tutoring program. "I knew I wanted a career that paired computers and teaching," he shares, "even if I didn't know exactly what that would look like as a teenager in Idaho."

Hunter took practice tests of both the ACT and the SAT and when he performed significantly better on the ACT, he decided to work with a private tutor to ensure he was as prepared as possible. He worked online with a student at the University of Idaho who helped him master the test content, as well as improve his time management skills. Hunter credits his tutor with helping him stay focused through their regular meetings while also reducing his test-related anxiety by teaching him concrete techniques to use when answering questions. Hunter performed exceptionally well on the ACT, and combined with his impressive grades and involvement in extracurricular activities, he was accepted to Stanford University, where he double majored in computer science and education before accepting a position as a computer science teacher in a large Bay Area public school system. While he taught middle grade and high school students to run scripts and create their own websites, he also obtained a master's degree in education from Santa Clara University.

Hunter loved his work and while he was offered numerous opportunities to move into a more administrative position, he always chose to remain in the classroom where he could do what he enjoyed most and work directly with students. After a few years in Silicon Valley, he accepted a new position at a private school in Honolulu. When a rare position for an ACT tutor opened up at the Honolulu office of Manhattan Review, Hunter applied and was readily welcomed to the team. Hunter's patience, extensive teaching experience, and passion for education are always remarked upon by his students, and he receives outstanding reviews from his private tutoring clients. When he isn't helping future college students prepare for the ACT, Hunter can be found perfecting his surfing skills, going whale watching with friends, and hiking to visit every waterfall on the island of Oahu.
