Students who seek realistic chances of acceptance to highly selective universities must produce SAT scores that are significantly above average. According to the College Board, the median total score on the 2016 SAT is 1010, with 50th-percentile sectional scores of about 510 Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) and 510 Math. A composite SAT score of 1200 is in the 81st percentile of all test-takers, while approximately 3% of students receive scores of 1400 or above. Average SAT scores at the most prestigious universities are usually in the top 5%. At Dartmouth College, for example, the middle-50% composite SAT score range for accepted students is 1410-1580, or the 97th through the 99th percentiles. This means that 75% of Dartmouth first-year students scored at least 1410 on the SAT (and many of those who did not were likely legacy or "development" admissions). The Massachusetts Institute of Technology reports even higher scores in the same middle-50% range (1480-1580). Standardized tests remain important to college admissions, and students who devote sufficient effort to test preparation will have a substantial advantage.

I like the amount of attention given to the topic and the instructor helped very much. She did a great job! My score on my diagnostic SAT went up 260 points!

Ken E., who has been a member of Manhattan Review's Kuwait City staff of SAT educators since 2017, has a total of nine years of experience as an SAT classroom instructor and individual tutor. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he began his SAT teaching career in the New York City area, and he has taught several hundred students how to master all of the exam's challenges.
Ken completed a bachelor's degree in mathematics at Rutgers University, and then a master's degree in education at Columbia University Teachers College. He served as a high school math teacher in Brooklyn for seven years before moving to Kuwait City. When he's not teaching, Ken is an amateur sports blogger who writes about his hometown teams, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers.
