Meet a Flushing SAT Tutor: Yolanda M.

Yolanda M. describes herself as "incredibly" familiar with tutoring. Diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia at a young age, she recalls struggling with many aspects of school most people simply take for granted. In order to help her optimize her strengths while overcoming her learning challenges, Yolanda's parents arranged for her to work with various tutors, sometimes through individual tutoring and other times in group settings. "I learned really early how important a good tutor could be," says Yolanda. "Not only did they provide me with the skills to master material, they really boosted my confidence by showing me I can learn whatever I need to."

Yolanda dreamed for many years of attending Boston University but knew the highly selective school would be challenging to get into. While she participated in extracurricular activities such as debate team and the high school newspaper and ensured her grades were strong, she also focused extensively on mastering the knowledge and test-taking strategies necessary for a stellar SAT score. She credits her time with her tutors for helping her obtain an almost perfect SAT score and allowing her to attend Boston University. While taking courses leading to an undergraduate degree in education, Yolanda also began working as a student tutor, helping others to identify their learning styles and succeed in their freshman and sophomore courses. Yolanda graduated from Boston University and went on to achieve her doctorate degree in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, one of the leading psychology programs in the world. She ultimately became a neuropsychologist specializing in identifying learning disorders in children and adolescents. When she had the opportunity to join a practice in the Flushing area dedicated to helping underserved populations, she leaped at the chance and happily relocated.

When Yolanda reached out to Manhattan Review about potentially joining the team as a part-time tutor, we were thrilled to bring her knowledge and enthusiasm to Flushing students. Yolanda loves working with students preparing to attend college and specializes in SAT prep through both group courses and individual tutoring programs. Her students love her frequent laughter and how she (gently) pushes them to excel. "If someone like me can do well on standardized tests, anyone can!" she grins. Yolanda loves to bake and has been known to bring homemade cookies and cupcakes to her classes. When she isn't tutoring, diagnosing learning differences, or baking up a storm, she can be found working on improving her Spanish and learning to tango.
