At Manhattan Review, we specialize in guiding motivated students to test-taking success, and we look forward to partnering with you to support all your SAT prep needs. The SAT is an established part of applying to college and university undergraduate programs, and for those students looking to score in the highest percentiles, set yourself up for the success you deserve by working with our professional and knowledgeable instructors. When it comes to learning, many students do perfectly well in classroom-style group settings, deriving important benefits from interacting with their peers and finding their retention enhanced by others' questions and comments. Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their fullest capabilities in a group setting. They worry about not grasping information as quickly as other students, fearing that they are holding the group back. Alternatively, these students may find themselves frustrated when they have mastered a concept but cannot move on until the rest of the group has demonstrated similar mastery. If you find learning complex information in a group more distracting than helpful and know you retain important concepts best through one-on-one instruction, consider working with one of the exceptional private tutors at Manhattan Review.

When it comes to preparing for the SAT, our dedicated tutors are ready to help students just like you master everything you need to know in order to obtain an impressively high score. When you partner with Manhattan Review, you receive access to our unparalleled study syllabus that continues to be unsurpassed in the test prep industry. Our resources and materials are thoughtfully curated using the latest advances in learning theory and cognitive functioning, ensuring you are equipped with everything you need to excel on the SAT. Given the importance undergraduate programs place on standardized test scores, students should make use of every possible advantage when it comes to preparing for this admittedly challenging exam. We take great care in pairing our private tutoring clients with just the right instructor for their specific learning- and test-related needs, because when taking the SAT, it is not enough to simply be confident in your knowledge of the test content…you also need to be confident in your test-taking skills, able to quickly identify the particular type of question you are facing before selecting the most effective strategy for arriving at the correct answer, all while pacing yourself over the course of this lengthy exam.

The SAT is composed of two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section has a possible range of scores from 200 to 800. Based on accumulated statistics, the average SAT scores for the top twenty universities in the United States are as follows: 711 to 768 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 740 to 797 for Math, and 1450 to 1554 for total SAT score. While these are merely guidelines and every college or university will vary, the importance of exceptionally high SAT scores cannot be underestimated. In order to be competitive for the most respected institutions of higher education, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the SAT.

Meet a Honolulu SAT Tutor: Michael D.

Michael D. was born in Toronto but moved to Portland at a young age. "One of the ways I coped with moving was through art," he explains. Michael discovered a love of drawing and painting when he was a child, and he spent countless hours creating his own comic books and using his computer to develop short animated series he shared online. "I was a pretty shy kid," says Michael, "so my parents signed me up for art classes right after we moved as a way for me to make friends. It was nice because we could start off talking about our art, which ultimately led to us talking about ourselves." Michael loved trying out new graphic design programs and trying different styles of animation in addition to creating more abstract paintings and images. Michael dreamed of attending the Rhode Island School of Design, respected around the world for producing leaders in the fields of graphic design, illustration, and other forms of art. "I knew getting accepted there would be like getting into Harvard or Stanford," says Michael, "so I wanted to make use of all the support I possibly could."

Michael worked with a private tutor, learning how to approach test questions and use the most effective strategies to arrive at the best answer. He took countless practice tests, familiarizing himself with pacing and time management skills, in addition to the content he would need to know. He also took an online group course through Manhattan Review "just to make sure I wasn't missing anything." Michael's dedication led to an improvement in both his test-related knowledge and his confidence in his test-taking abilities. "After so much focused study, I was much more prepared than I ever could have been on my own, and on the day of the real test, I didn't panic or feel overwhelmed… I wasn't even surprised by anything." Michael's hard work and diligence paid off, and he obtained a near-perfect SAT score, earning himself a place at the undergraduate program of his dreams, as well as generous financial aid awards.

After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, Michael lived in New York City for a few years until his wife received a promotion in her company that required them to relocate to Honolulu. "I'd built up a pretty good client portfolio," smiles Michael, "and in addition to doing some freelance work, I hoped I'd find a chance to do some teaching, since I'd done it to complete my required student teaching hours and discovered I really loved it." In Honolulu, Michael found a position teaching art in an after-school program, and while working with the high school students, he found himself discussing the SAT, particularly the tips and tricks he'd used to obtain a high score. Michael ultimately went on to obtain a master's degree in education from the University of Hawaii, and when a position for an SAT tutor opened at the Honolulu office of Manhattan Review, we were thrilled to welcome him to the team. Students love Michael's ability to diffuse the stress of studying for the SAT, as well as his creative approaches to teaching. When he isn't helping future college students master the SAT, Michael can be found biking around Oahu, practicing his craft beer brewing, and taking traditional Polynesian dance classes with his wife.
