Most universities in the United States do not specify minimum SAT requirements for their applicants, but the SAT is nonetheless a significant component of undergraduate admissions decisions. There is a strong correlation between university acceptance rates and the average test scores of new students, and lower admit rates are strongly linked to higher test scores. Stanford University, for example, is one of the most selective universities in the world, and this institution accepts about 5% of its applicants. 75% of Stanford students received scores of 690 or higher on SAT critical reading, 700 or higher on the math section of the SAT, and 690 or above on SAT writing. Admission to Harvard University, with an acceptance rate of 6%, is associated with middle-50% SAT scores of 700-800 critical reading, 700-800 math, and 710-790 writing. New students at Georgetown University (acceptance rate of 17%) received middle-50% composite scores of 1320-1500 on the 2016 SAT (1600-point scale). Students interested in acceptance to elite universities must take advantage of every opportunity to improve their SAT performance.
