Although ACT has classified test score ranges as appropriate for different types of postsecondary institutions, a "good" ACT score is ultimately defined in comparison to other students at a given university. Students accepted to the University of California-Davis, for instance, received middle-50% ACT composite scores between 24 and 30, with a median of approximately 27. At this school, an applicant with an ACT score of 29 would be a competitive candidate for admission. The University of California-Berkeley reports much higher middle-50% ACT scores of 29-34, and a total score of 29 would be lower than 75% of the class. ACT preparation must begin with a sober assessment of test scores that provide realistic chances of acceptance. ACT scores above the 50th percentile for a specific university should be the goal, and higher scores quite simply offer better chances of acceptance. By taking practice tests, the student can easily calculate the difference between their current ability level and their target score, which will provide concrete direction for study and preparation.

Meet an Oslo ACT Tutor: Gregorius A.

Gregorius A. is a graduate of the University of Virginia (bachelor's degree in mathematics) and the University of Florida (master's degree in education). A native of Orlando, Florida, he has been teaching ACT prep courses and private tutoring sessions in Oslo since last year. He has a total of 11 years of experience as an ACT educator in the United States and in Norway.

Gregorius has taught ACT prep to students from more than 30 countries, and his ACT clients have gone on to major in almost every subject area. He describes his teaching as fixed in its macro-level concepts and flexible in its micro-level implementation. "Every ACT student has the same goal," he says. "But there are many different ways to get there."
