The SAT is composed of two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section has a possible range of scores from 200 to 800. Based on accumulated statistics, the average SAT scores for the top twenty universities in the United States are as follows: 711 to 768 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 740 to 797 for Math, and 1450 to 1554 for total SAT score. While these are merely guidelines and every college or university will vary, the importance of exceptionally high SAT scores cannot be underestimated. In order to be competitive for the most respected institutions of higher education, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the SAT.

If you dream of attending a world-class college or university, it is imperative to score in the highest percentiles on the SAT. While such a score may seem overwhelming or even impossible, the reality is that tests such as the SAT can be understood and even mastered through hard work and dedicated practice. This is an exam where preparation and study truly do pay off, and when you work with one of our talented instructors, you are investing in yourself by taking advantage of the amazing SAT preparation options available to students right here in Berkeley. You have already worked exceptionally hard during your high school courses, but impressive grades are not enough to convince the most prestigious colleges and universities of your desirability. A high SAT score will always made those on the Admissions Committees pay attention and take notice of your application, which is incredibly important, given that there are always more applications to sort through than there are available spots in the incoming freshman class. Meet a Berkeley SAT Tutor: Yolanda Z.

Yolanda Z. describes herself as being "incredibly" familiar with the concept of tutoring and working with experienced educational and instructional experts, having been diagnosed with ADHD when she was a child. Yolanda struggled to pay attention in class and even though she studied hard for tests, her performance never reflected her hours of preparation, leading her to feel despondent "because I really wanted to do well in school. My parents kept assuring me I wasn't dumb…they said we just needed to figure out how I learned best." Yolanda's parents worked closely with her school, and after multiple doctor's visits and rounds of testing, Yolanda was determined to have ADHD, and her academic difficulties began to be understood in light of her diagnosis. Yolanda's guidance counselor helped her parents find a tutor to work with Yolanda, teaching her test-taking strategies and helping her learn to study in ways that made sense to her and allowed her to retain even the most challenging information. "Working with a tutor didn't suddenly make learning instantly easy for me," clarifies Yolanda, "but it provided me with a map that showed me how to learn, and that was like being given a key than unlocked a treasure chest. For the first time in my life, I realized it was possible to remember things and to do well on tests." Yolanda grins proudly. "Not only did that improve my grades, but it also improved my self-esteem, too."

A native of Rhode Island, Yolanda grew up dreaming of attending Brown University but knew there was no way her family could afford such a prestigious school even if she managed to be accepted. "I knew that if I truly wanted to go there, I would have to receive financial assistance, and after doing a ton of research, it seemed that a high SAT score was one realistic way of getting scholarships. So, I decided I would work however hard I needed to in order to ace the SAT," Yolanda recalls with a laugh. Yolanda worked with her tutor to prepare for the SAT, in addition to participating in an online prep course that offered her flexibility around her ongoing commitments and extracurricular activities. "By the time the real SAT came around, I'd taken so many practice exams and studied so many questions, nothing was a surprise, and I was able to be relaxed enough to work to my full potential."

Yolanda's persistence and dedication were rewarded when she not only received her official acceptance letter to Brown University, but also received numerous and generous offers of financial aid, ensuring she could afford to attend the school of her dreams due almost entirely to her outstanding SAT score. Yolanda graduated from Brown with a degree in education before obtaining her master's degree with a specialization in education policy from Columbia University. Yolanda ultimately accepted a position with an international education consulting company headquartered in San Francisco where she was able to work with schools on identifying better ways to serve the needs of students with learning differences, ensuring other children would receive the support that had been so beneficial to her as a child.

Passionate about ensuring equal access to education for everyone, Yolanda began offering weekend seminars for neurodiverse high school students on how to prepare for the SAT, using the skills she'd developed from her own tutoring experiences. Her workshops became so popular that waitlists began to develop, and when she was invited to join the team at the Berkeley office of Manhattan Review, she couldn't have been happier. "I love working with and supporting students, especially students who think differently," she says. "They give me the most hope for the future because they're not afraid of taking risks and doing things differently, and that's the best way to bring about much-needed change." When Yolanda isn't making the SAT less terrifying to her students, she enjoys crafting handmade jewelry, working on her amateur fencing skills, and hosting her East Coast family members, particularly when they need a place to escape cold and snowy winters.
