The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed. 

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

Meet a Chapel Hill ACT Tutor: Oliver D.

Oliver D. grew up in Michigan and credits the long, cold winters for sparking his love of science. "My family was into pretty much every outdoor activity imaginable, but I could only ski and ice skate so much," he laughs. "I also learned really fast that if I was going to stay indoors, I had to entertain myself because my parents were always more than happy to find chores for me to do." Oliver spent much of his free time at the local library and read all the science-related books he could find, especially ones that offered step-by-step instructions on creating impressive experiments. Between the books he read and the information he found online, Oliver spent a significant amount of time combining liquids and chemicals and creating reactions while testing out various hypotheses. "I loved experiments because I never knew what was going to happen," he shares. "You could change one tiny variable and it might not do anything observable, or it could change the entire experiment! Science really helped me overcome my fear of failure because you never really fail…you find things that don't work and you use that information to guide you towards something that might work." Oliver held officers' positions in his high school's student government, as well as the Chemistry Club, and he hosted a popular bi-weekly science-themed podcast that attempted to separate science from science fiction in popular books and movies. 

Oliver knew he wanted to become a science educator, and given the science section on the ACT, it was no surprise he scored higher on that test than the SAT. Oliver worked with a private tutor once a week, focusing on the areas he didn't feel quite as strong in, and he appreciated the tutor's ability to meet in-person or online, allowing him to study at times that were most convenient for him. Oliver credits his tutor with helping him stay focused and also for teaching him to manage his sense of time, ensuring he paced himself and had time to answer every question. Oliver performed exceptionally well on the ACT, and combined with his impressive grades and extracurricular activities, he was accepted to the University of Michigan, where he double majored in biochemistry and education. After graduating, Oliver completed dual master's degrees in chemistry and education from the University of Chicago before accepting a position as a high school science teacher in Chicago's large public school system. 

Oliver loved his work and while he was repeatedly offered the chance to assume a more administrative role, he always chose to remain in the classroom where he could do what he enjoyed most and work directly with students. After a few years in Chicago, Oliver accepted a new position at a private high school near Chapel Hill. When a rare opportunity for an ACT tutor opened at Manhattan Review's Chapel Hill office, Oliver's friends encouraged him to apply, and we couldn't have been happier to welcome him to the team. Oliver's patience, first-hand teaching experience, and passion for education are greatly appreciated by his students, and he never fails to receive outstanding reviews from the students he works with.
