ACT Tutoring in Berkeley

Are you a Berkeley-area student planning on taking the ACT and seeking to obtain the highest possible score on this potentially life-changing exam? At Manhattan Review, we offer all the support you need to excel on the ACT. In recent years, the ACT has become an increasingly popular test to take when preparing to apply for college, and in many states the ACT has surpassed the SAT in terms of student preference. When preparing for a test as important as the ACT, many students find that they learn perfectly well in the company of others, viewing their peers' questions or comments as insightful or even inspiring. Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their fullest potential in a group setting. They worry about slowing down the group or holding them back, working at a slower pace or needing additional time to grasp a particular concept. Alternatively, they experience frustration because they have mastered a subject but cannot move on until the rest of the group performs similarly. If you know you learn best through one-on-one instruction customized to your unique learning needs, consider working with one of our world-class private tutors. Personalized attention and individual lesson plans can significantly improve your ability to learn and retain new information. If you want to obtain the highest ACT score possible by leveraging the academic strengths you already possess while learning how to overcome any areas of weakness that might negatively affect your test performance, we invite you to contact us today to find out more about our private tutoring opportunities. There's no better reason to work with a tutor than to ensure your own college dreams come true.

The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

Meet a Berkeley ACT Tutor: Jennifer P.

Jennifer P. grew up in Wisconsin and credits the long, cold winters for sparking her love of science. "My brothers were into every outdoor activity imaginable, but I could only ski and ice skate so much," she recalls with a laugh. "But if I was going to stay indoors, I also had to entertain myself because if my parents thought I was bored, they had no difficulty finding chores for me to do." Jennifer spent a great deal of time at her local library and loved science-related books, particularly ones that offered step-by-step instructions on how to create at-home experiments. Between the books she checked out and the information she found online, Jennifer spent a significant amount of time in the kitchen, combining liquids and chemicals and creating reactions while testing out various hypotheses. "I realized I loved experiments because I never knew what was going to happen…it was a surprise each time, but you could also learn from it, identifying what worked and what didn't and make changes accordingly. It never felt like failure, just like learning new information." Jennifer loved talking about her projects with others, and in high school she began writing a science-themed column for her school's online newspaper. She additionally held officer positions in the Astronomy Club and the Science Club, while also volunteering to help middle school students prepare entries for the annual Science Fair, which she herself won two times.

Jennifer knew from an early age that she wanted to be a science educator, and after taking practice tests for both the SAT and the ACT, it was clear she excelled on the ACT, likely due to the test's included science section. She worked with a private tutor once a week, sometimes in-person and other times using virtual technology, and she credits her tutor for helping her to create an effective study program that kept her learning focused and on track. Jennifer performed exceptionally well on the ACT, and combined with her strong high school performance, she was accepted at the University of Chicago, where she double majored in biochemistry and education. After graduating, Jennifer was accepted to graduate school at the University of Southern California, where she obtained a degree in teaching before accepting a position as a high school science teacher in a large public school system.

Jennifer loved her work and while she was repeatedly offered the opportunity to assume a more administrative role, she always chose to remain in the classroom where she could work directly with students. She relocated to the Bay Area after a few years in Southern California, and when Manhattan Review experienced a rare opening for an ACT tutor, Jennifer's friends and colleagues encouraged her to apply. We couldn't have been more delighted at her knowledge, teaching skills, and firsthand teaching experience, and appreciated Jennifer's dedication to helping students achieve their own individual academic success. Jennifer never fails to receive rave reviews from her clients. While she occasionally teaches a group prep course or weekend intensive class, working one-on-one with motivated students is where she finds her greatest satisfaction. When she isn't helping future college students excel on the ACT, Jennifer enjoys attending her local community theater, watching the stars and planets with her telescope on clear nights, and taking turns hosting potlucks with friends.
