As an assessment, the TOEFL offers students several advantages. One of the most important of these is accessibility. The internet-based TOEFL, or iBT, can be taken throughout the year and on most days of the week at test centers in major cities worldwide. Aside from a brief mandatory waiting period in between test attempts, students may take the TOEFL as many times as they like. More importantly, the TOEFL is on the cutting edge of language instruction. There are individual sections devoted primarily to the language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, but many of the exercises require test-takers to synthesize these abilities, promoting functional communication rather than individual competencies. Finally, TOEFL acceptance is universal at postsecondary institutions in the United States, and the test is also widely considered at universities in other English-speaking countries. Students applying to universities in the United States are advised to consider the TOEFL, which unlike the IELTS, is accepted at every school and at every level.
