TOEFL Role in Application

TOEFL Score Requirements

Many institutions have TOEFL score requirements, meaning they have a pre-set score that represents a minimum level of English proficiency for admission to the university. Often score requirements for graduate schools are much higher than score requirements for undergraduate programs at the same institutions. Many top graduate schools have TOEFL score requirements in the 90s or 100.

Undergraduate programs might have score requirements in the 70s or 80s. Some Ivy League schools require a TOEFL score of 100 for undergraduate admission as well. The Web site www.toeflgoanywhere.org has a search function that lets test takers enter the names of their schools of choice to search for the institution's TOEFL score requirements.
