The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100.

If you are intent on taking your TOEFL preparation to the next level consider working with a private tutor to direct and focus your study, making certain you have covered all relevant material. Manhattan Review is dedicated to helping future university students achieve their own academic successes, and there is no need to attempt to master a test as important as the TOEFL on your own. Rather than worrying about piecing together a study program by yourself, benefit from our experienced and personable tutors, each with strong teaching backgrounds, and learn in a way that the material is retained and easily retrievable on the day of your exam.

Students in Cambridge know the importance of attending a top-tier college or university and also know how competitive college acceptance can be. Meet a Cambridge TOEFL Tutor: Rishi F.

Rishi was born in Panaji, India, and lived there for the first twelve years of her life. "I grew up learning English along with Hindi, and English was definitely harder," Rishi recalls with a laugh. When Rishi's father was offered a job as an engineer in California, Rishi was nervous but also excited, "mostly because I wanted to live in the same state as Disneyland." Rishi enjoyed being in the spotlight and quickly became an enthusiastic participant in her school's speech and debate team, as well as drama club. When she struggled to master certain aspects of algebra, her parents found her a private tutor who helped her not only learn the math but also helped boost her confidence that she could master even the most challenging material.

Rishi graduated at the top of her class and while her parents were sad to see her move across the United States to attend Dartmouth College, Rishi loved the opportunity to make new friends and explore a new part of the world. She majored in linguistics, seeking to understand systems of language as thoroughly as possible in the hopes of one day helping others master the English language as she had. "English is an important factor in being successful in today's global economy," she says. "I remember thinking about older family members in India and wondering how different their lives might have been if they'd only had the chance to learn English."

After graduating from Dartmouth, Rishi returned to California (much to her family's delight) and obtained a master's in teaching from the University of Southern California. She worked for two years teaching English as a second language to adult learners before relocating to New York and obtaining a TESOL certificate from New York University. Rishi continued to work with adult learners to improve their comprehension and mastery of the English language, and she eventually began volunteering to work with underprivileged high school students who were non-native English speakers. When Rishi had the chance to move to Boston to work with underserved immigrant populations, she jumped at the opportunity, and when she connected with Manhattan Review staff at an educational networking event, it was a perfect match.

Rishi has been with Manhattan Review since 2015, and she loves watching her students make progress. "There's nothing better than when someone finally gets something they've been struggling to understand," she smiles. "To know I'm helping change lives, one person at a time, is a beautiful and humbling privilege." When she isn't guiding her students to TOEFL success, Rishi enjoys going to comedy shows, going out on her kayak with her sister, and doing her best to recreate her mother's delicious recipes.
