Experts have described the various TOEFL composite score ranges as follows: "expert" (118-120), "very good" (110-117), "good" (94-109), "competent" (60-93), "modest" (35-59), "limited" (32-34), and "extremely limited" (0-31). These guidelines are, however, too vague to be of use to university degree programs. Most university divisions, departments, and degree programs set their own TOEFL requirements, and this is most frequently established in terms of a minimum total score (although sectional score benchmarks are not uncommon). Highly selective institutions can afford to impose strict TOEFL standards, and a total score of 100 along with sectional scores of 25 each is the most frequent expectation at these sorts of universities. Less selective programs are usually willing to admit students with lower TOEFL scores, although acceptance will sometimes be accompanied by additional language requirements.
Manhattan Review's TOEFL prep courses and private tutoring have helped thousands of students receive high TOEFL scores suitable for study at elite universities such as Stanford, Harvard, the University of California-Berkeley, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, the University of Virginia, Duke, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Columbia, the University of California-Los Angeles, and the University of Chicago. Manhattan Review's TOEFL clients learn the skills necessary to pass the TOEFL, but more importantly, they become confident speakers of the English language, which helps them succeed in their coursework and in their future professional lives. Many of our past TOEFL clients have eventually been hired by Fortune 500 companies and firms in Oslo, including Dow Chemical, Bank of America, New York Life Insurance, United Technologies, Berkshire Hathaway, Eitzen Group, Intex Resources, SpareBank 1, Pareto Group, and Oslo Kino. I highly recommend Manhattan Review's TOEFL preparation course for anybody interested in taking the exam. I took an intensive course and took the exam only after 4 weeks of classes, and got a 116 score. The teaching method is excellent. It focuses on techniques and strategies that allow students to understand exactly what is required to succeed on examination day. Tutors are very flexible and willing to adapt to the student's schedule, as well as reachable and always ready to help and follow up on whatever the student might need.
