The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.

The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

Those students who work with our private tutors consistently gain admission into the top English-speaking colleges and universities in the United States and around the world, including Princeton University, Yale University, Harvard University, New York University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Georgetown University, the University of Chicago, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, Northwestern University, American University, Rice University, the University of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere.

Meet a Flushing IELTS Tutor: Brian B.

Brian B. was born in Utah but moved to Germany as a child when his mother received a professorship at a university in Munich. "Learning German definitely wasn't easy," he recalls, "but thankfully I was able to work with a tutor when it became clear I needed additional help." Brian returned to working with his tutor on and off throughout his European schooling, always appreciating that someone was there to help him better understand academic concepts and remember material for tests. While Brian enjoyed the opportunity to live in another country and experience another culture, he always planned on returning to the United States for college. He grew up dreaming of becoming a teacher, partly due to being inspired by his mother, but also because he experienced firsthand how a good teacher could truly change lives. "I've always been a people person," he smiles, "and I'm happiest when I'm around people. What could be better than being around students and helping them learn things that might affect them the rest of their lives?"

Thanks to his hard-work and diligence, Brian was admitted to Stanford University, where he studied English and education. He later relocated across the country and obtained a master's degree in teaching from Columbia University, followed by a TESOL certificate. Brian fell in love with New York and during his graduate work, he became familiar with Manhattan Review and applied for the chance to work as an instructor with a special focus on the IELTS and the TOEFL. After graduating from Columbia University, Brian was offered a job teaching English as a second language to adults who had immigrated to the Flushing area from another country, and while he was thrilled with his new employment, he also chose to also continue working with Manhattan Review as a private tutor.

Brian approaches his work with each student in a different way, first doing his best to understand how the student learns and processes information. As someone fluent in two languages, Brian understands the difficulty of switching back and forth and of struggling to express himself at times. He is proud to be supporting prospective university students as they pursue their dreams, and there is regularly a waiting list to work with him. When Brian isn't patiently guiding students towards English-speaking and test-taking success, he can be found volunteering as an ESL conversation partner at a local organization, running with his adopted retired racing Greyhound, and painting scenery for the community theater group his children regularly participate in.
