The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.

The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

Those students who work with Manhattan Review's private tutors consistently gain admission into the top English-speaking colleges and universities in the United States and around the world, including Princeton University, Yale University, Harvard University, New York University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Georgetown University, the University of Chicago, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Southern California, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, Northwestern University, American University, Rice University, the University of Pennsylvania, and elsewhere.

Meet a Cambridge IELTS Tutor: Brenda V.

Brenda V. dreamed of becoming a famous actress from a very young age. "I'd practice my acceptance speeches for various awards in front of my younger siblings," she laughs. "They were never particularly impressed." Brenda easily found a home in community theater, where she made strong friendships and enjoyed starring roles in numerous plays. When she learned that her mother had been offered a job in France, she was devastated to move away from all she'd ever known. "Now, of course, I'm aware that there's such a thing as French cinema, but as a little kid, all I knew was I was losing my friends," she shares. Brenda and her family moved to France when she was in middle school, and Brenda remembers how difficult it was to learn French. "I attended a French immersion school, but I was so overwhelmed, it was a relief when I started working with a private tutor," she recalls. Brenda soon came to enjoy living in Paris, and when her mother was given the opportunity to extend her contract, Brenda whole-heartedly supported staying in France.

When it came time to begin applying to colleges, Brenda knew exactly where she wanted to go. "My parents met at Syracuse, and I always dreamed of going there myself," she says. Due to her impressive SAT scores, as well as her strong high school grades and involvement in clubs and other extracurricular activities, Brenda was accepted to Syracuse University, where she double majored in education and drama. "I loved acting, and I loved connecting with other people, so teaching drama seemed like a perfect fit for me." After graduating from Syracuse, Brenda moved to Los Angeles, where she obtained a master's degree in education from the University of California at Los Angeles. While teaching drama classes to underserved high school students, Brenda realized how many of her students were less-than-proficient in English. "Drama class, and learning their lines for a play, became a way for a lot of my students to improve their English reading and speaking skills, and I thought, what an amazing opportunity!" says Brenda.

After obtaining a TESOL certificate from the University of California at San Diego, Brenda moved overseas and began teaching English and drama to children in Thailand, South Korea, and Japan. While she enjoyed the chance to travel, she was also excited when she was offered a teaching position in the drama department at a school in Boston. "I was ready to stay in one place for a while, and I was excited to be on the East Coast." While Brenda enjoyed her role in the theater, she wanted to continue helping others master the English language, since she knew firsthand how difficult learning a second language could be. When a position opened at the Cambridge office of Manhattan Review, Brenda applied, and the rest is history. Brenda has been part of the Manhattan Review team for over eight years, and she loves helping students prepare for the IELTS. Her students appreciate her attention to detail as much as her ability to make them feel comfortable when mastering the English language. When Brenda isn't helping the next generation of actors and actresses achieve their own academic success, she can be found traveling to see Broadway plays, hosting friends from around the world at her Cambridge home, and learning to play the violin, much to the annoyance of her adopted cat, Oscar.
