The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100. While every college varies in its specific requirements, the importance of a high TOEFL score cannot be overstated. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking academic programs, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the TOEFL.

Meet a Honolulu TOEFL Tutor: Charlotte A.
Charlotte A. was born in a small town in Ohio and grew up dreaming of traveling the world. "Where I grew up, no one ever really moves away," shares Charlotte. "People talk and dream about it, but when it comes to leaving behind everything they know, they always decide to stay where things are familiar. I was determined I would be different." Hazel loved pretending she was a teacher and would arrange her dolls as if they were students in a classroom as she taught them whatever she happened to be learning in school, educating them in the finer points of math, English, social studies, and history. While Charlotte wasn't certain exactly how she would combine her love of teaching with her dreams of traveling the world, she knew the first step towards independence was obtaining the best education possible. "My family always stressed the importance of education," says Charlotte, "so I knew whatever I ultimately chose as a profession would happen after I attended college." Charlotte was involved in a variety of extracurricular activities during high school, including volleyball, cheerleading, drama, Spanish club, and student government. Combined with her impressive grades, Charlotte's hard work earned her numerous offers of admission to colleges across the United States. While her family was disappointed to see her move, they fully supported her decision to attend Duke University.
During her undergraduate study, Charlotte began to work part-time as a tutor in the university's learning center, and what initially began as a way to help manage expenses allowed Charlotte the opportunity to fully explore her passion for teaching and helping others. She graduated with a degree in history before pursuing a master's in teaching and a TESOL certificate from nearby American University. After working in public school settings for a few years, Charlotte was offered a position with an international company focused on helping children and young adults around the world learn the English language. Charlotte packed her suitcase and for the next ten years, she traveled the world, living and teaching in countries such as Bali, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.
After a while, Charlotte decided it was time to put down roots and remain in one place for more than a year or two, so she happily accepted a position with a public school in Honolulu. When a colleague told her about an opening with Manhattan Review's Honolulu office, Charlotte applied and, given her impressive teaching background, she was welcomed to the team with open arms. Charlotte is a naturally gifted instructor, but she works hard to stay on top of the latest trends in education, as well as the latest research on the most effective teaching strategies and methodologies. Her students appreciate her extensive experience, as well as her ability to adapt whatever she happens to be teaching to their level of knowledge. When she isn't guiding future college students to TOEFL success, Charlotte can be found volunteering with elderly ESL students, watching foreign films and travel documentaries, and attending shows at Diamond Head Theatre with friends on the weekends.
