Are you a Honolulu-based student seeking to obtain the highest score possible on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)? The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.

The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

At Manhattan Review, we have used our extensive experience in the test prep industry to help students just like you work to their full potential, obtaining the test scores they need to make their collegiate dreams an exciting reality. Meet a Honolulu IELTS Tutor: Consuela R.

Consuela R. was born in Santiago, Chile, and lived in the country until she was ten, at which point her mother was offered an exciting promotion that allowed the family to relocate to the United States. "I was sad to leave my cousins and friends, but I was also excited about living in a new place and trying American food." Ever since she was a little girl, Consuela loved helping her mother in the kitchen and the family garden, growing vegetables she learned to turn into delicious meals using traditional family recipes passed down through generations. "I loved learning to combine ingredients and watching baked goods take shape," shares Consuela. "It also didn't hurt that, as the cook, I was free to taste and enjoy everything I prepared." When her family moved to Houston, Texas, Consuela quickly came to appreciate the culinary offerings of her new home, and thankfully her new house had enough space for her to plant a vegetable garden. The first night she served carrots and squash she had grown and cooked herself, "I was so proud, and I knew I wanted to do something with my life that involved cooking and sharing food with others," she smiles.

Consuela moved to Texas with a basic knowledge of English, and while many of her new friends spoke Spanish, she soon found herself overwhelmed by the pace at which her teachers communicated. Her mother arranged for her to take English lessons both in-person and online, allowing her to quickly improve her grasp of this notoriously difficult language. It wasn't long before Consuela felt confident in her English reading and writing skills, and she soon found herself helping other international students improve their own grasp of the English language. Consuela even went so far as to found an ESL club during her freshman year of high school, and she was surprised to learn how much she enjoyed helping others grasp new information. While she wasn't certain exactly how she would do it, she hoped to one day find a way to combine her love of teaching with her love of cooking. Due to Consuela's impressive academic performance, as well as her high ACT score and involvement in extracurricular activities, she was accepted to numerous colleges across the U.S. and ultimately chose to attend Yale University, where she majored in education. She then attended world-famous culinary programs in France and Spain, but rather than accept a position in a European restaurant, she decided to travel and see the world, although she first returned to the United States and obtained her TESOL certificate from American University. Consuela then packed her suitcases and accepted a position with an international nonprofit organization focused on teaching English to students.

Consuela loved living all around the world, and as she taught English to students, she learned about the local ingredients available for use and began to create recipes based off them, which she published on the travel blog she wrote. While she shared some of her cooking techniques with the local families of the students she taught, she also took every opportunity she could to learn from them, picking up new skills through first-hand experience. After more than a decade spent in various countries across Southeast Asia and South America, Consuela decided she wanted to establish her own home and accepted an administrative position with her company in Honolulu. While she continued to offer sought-after cooking seminars in her new home, Consuela missed working directly with students, and when a rare opening came up at the Honolulu office of Manhattan Review, Consuela applied and was quickly welcomed to the team. Her students appreciate her enthusiasm and experience, and when she isn't helping future college students prepare for the IELTS, Consuela can be found tending to a shared neighborhood vegetable and fruit garden, teaching cooking lessons at local food venues, and working on her own cookbook, which she intends to publish soon.
