The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100. While every college varies in its specific requirements, the importance of a high TOEFL score cannot be overstated. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking academic programs, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the TOEFL.

Meet a Flushing TOEFL Tutor: Ae-Cha C.

Ae-Cha moved to New York with her parents from South Korea when she was seven years old and remembers being both nervous and excited about the move. "I was really worried about making new friends because the only people I knew were my brother and sister and I couldn't imagine spending all my free time with them," she laughs. While learning English was immensely challenging, Ae-Cha exposed herself to the new language as much as possible, watching English television shows, reading English books, and listening to songs with English lyrics. "I've always loved languages," she shares, "and when became obvious I was picking up English faster than my siblings, I became the unofficial tutor, helping them with homework assignments and practicing naming things in English around the house."

Ae-Cha made friends at her new school and enjoyed the diversity she encountered. "At lunch and recess, you would hear many different languages, and I wanted to learn them all!" she recalls. "Being able to speak the same language as someone else can seem like such a small thing, but it's actually huge, making them feel welcome or even validated." Ae-Cha's parents ensured she kept up with her native language of Korean, and in addition to learning English, she also studied French in high school, quickly becoming fluent and even participating in a cultural exchange program in Paris.

Ae-Cha was a diligent and hard-working student, and her strong grades and impressive test scores earned her a spot at Yale University, where she double majored in education and French. She also worked as a tutor in the Yale Center for Language Study and loved her time helping her fellow students. Ae-Cha later obtained a master's degree in teaching and education from American University, in addition to completing a TESOL certificate, before accepting a position as a French teacher at a high school near Flushing. Ae-Cha joined Manhattan Review as a TOEFL instructor in 2018, and her students appreciate her multilingual skills, in addition to her ability to help them learn the intricacies of English language assessment exams. When Ae-Cha isn't working with students, she can be found learning to play the drums, painting the scenery and people in her neighborhood, and visiting local community theaters with her family and friends.
