The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.

The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

Meet a Flushing IELTS Tutor: Rosa T.

Rosa T. was born in Texas but has lived all around the world, thanks to her mother being an officer in the United States military. "As a kid, I hated moving around so much," she recalls, "but as I got older, I came to appreciate the opportunity to experience so many different countries and cultures." Always an avid reader, Rosa quickly developed a passion for history, and she couldn't get enough of books about the indigenous peoples and societies of North America. "My mother is from Mexico, and I think it's important to understand where I came from as much as where I want to go." Fluent in English and Spanish, Rosa loved getting to visit family members in Oaxaca, where she heard beloved tales of her own ancestors, as well as local traditions, beliefs, and legends. "I'm fortunate to have a very rich cultural heritage, and I wanted to explore and share that with others who might want to reconnect to their own pasts," she says when explaining the decision she made to obtain an undergraduate degree in history.

As the first person in her family to attend college, Rosa did her due diligence, understanding the importance of grades, essays, and recommendation letters, in addition to demonstrating a strong performance on standardized tests. "I have never been a test taker," she laughs, "but it's not just something you're born with…I worked with a tutor during high school who showed me I can learn anything I set my mind to." Rosa's hard work and persistence paid off, and she received a generous scholarship along with admission to the University of California at Los Angeles. During her undergraduate studies, Rosa had the opportunity to conduct field research throughout Mexico and Latin America, and she especially enjoyed interviewing the local elders and recording their memories for posterity.

Rosa used the research she conducted to write articles for scholarly and academic journals before she wrote a book, a fictional account of a Latin American woman based on the living women she'd met and interacted with. She was invited to speak at various traveling gallery shows depicting tools, clothing, and other items important to Latin American culture, and she eventually settled near Flushing, becoming an important voice in the Latin American art and writing scene. Shortly after moving, Rosa completed a TESOL certificate at Queens College. Not content with all she'd accomplished, Rosa joined Manhattan Review a few months after moving to New York. "I want every student to know they are capable of going to college," she says, "and I will personally do what I can to help as many students as I can." Rosa's students love her warm, gregarious personality but also appreciate her attention to detail when studying for the IETLS. When Rosa isn't helping students master the English language, she can be found flamenco dancing, enjoying the tapas her chef husband cooks, and traveling with her children to Mexico to visit family.
