The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100. While every college varies in its specific requirements, the importance of a high TOEFL score cannot be overstated. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking academic programs, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the TOEFL.

Meet a Cambridge TOEFL Tutor: George C.

George C. grew up dreaming of traveling the world. Born in a small town in Nebraska, he developed an early love of books about faraway places and waited eagerly for his grandparents to share their travel magazines with him so he could see pictures of places like Africa and Australia. "I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living, but I knew I didn't want to settle down and stay in one place, the way everyone else in my family had," he recalls. George was an active athlete in high school, participating in cross-country, baseball, and swimming, and he also acted in a fair number of plays. He worked hard to maintain high grades and was fortunate to have numerous retired teachers in his family "who were always willing to help me when I didn't understand something."

George knew he wanted to move away from Nebraska for college, and he was thrilled when he was accepted to the University of California at Berkeley, offering him the chance to enjoy a different climate, as well as to see the ocean for the first time. During his undergraduate study, George began working as a tutor through the university's learning center, and what started as a way to make some additional money ultimately helped George realize his passion for helping others. George graduated with a degree in history and, having enjoyed life on the West Coast, he decided to experience living on the East Coast. He obtained a master's in teaching from American University before obtaining a TESOL certificate from Columbia University. Equipped with the necessary knowledge and credentials, he joined a company focused on teaching English to students around the world and happily packed his suitcase.

George spent ten years living in countries such as Thailand, Bali, Spain, Ecuador, and South Korea teaching English to elementary and middle school children. After getting married and having a child, however, he and his wife wanted to settle in one place, and when his wife was offered a job in Cambridge, George reached out to Manhattan Review about joining the team as a TOEFL instructor. George is a natural instructor, offering both group prep courses and private tutoring, but whatever the setting, his number one priority is making sure students are truly grasping the material. "I don't want anyone to just repeat things back to me…I want them to understand it for themselves, to be able to explain things using their own words because that's the difference between memorization and true retention." George's students love hearing his stories of living and working abroad and appreciate his sense of humor, as well as his ability to craft memorable examples. When he isn't helping students master the TOEFL, George enjoys watching foreign films and documentaries, exploring new restaurants with his wife, and going whale watching as often as he can.
