The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100. While every college varies in its specific requirements, the importance of a high TOEFL score cannot be overstated. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking academic programs, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the TOEFL.

TOEFL Prep Course Calgary - Photo of Student Mirco

My classes with Mr. Scheno were perfect to prepare for the actual TOEFL test – I can give my total recommendation for attending his classes. During our first appopintment he analyzed my strengths and weaknesses to set up my personal course syllabus. These customized classes improved my writing, speaking, reading and listening abilities a lot and raised my confidence to succeed the TOEFL test, which I in fact succeeded. At any time, Mr. Scheno responded rapidly and accurately to my questions and was available even beyond classes. It was a great and successfull experience to work with Mr. Scheno. Many thanks!

Meet a Calgary TOEFL Tutor: Salma J.

Salma J. was born in Quito, Ecuador, and moved to the United States during elementary school when her father accepted a new job in El Paso. As a child, Salma loved to pretend she was a teacher and would place her dolls and stuffed animals on her bed, pretending they were her students as she taught them whatever she happened to be learning in school, including the finer points of English, math, and history. "I knew I wanted to be a professional educator," she shares, "but I also wanted to travel and experience different cultures, and while I had no idea how I would turn my two passions into a job, I knew the first step towards creating the life I wanted involved a college education." During high school, Salma was involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including softball, cheerleading, student government, and drama. When combined with her high grades and an impressive SAT score, Salma's hard work was rewarded with numerous offers of acceptance at colleges across the United States. While her family was sad to see her leave, they fully supported her decision to attend Georgetown University. "I mean, when else was I going to have the chance to live in DC?" laughs Salma.

During her undergraduate study, Salma began to work part-time as a bilingual tutor in the university's learning center, and what initially began as a way to help manage expenses allowed her the opportunity to fully explore her passion for teaching and helping others. Salma graduated with a degree in education before pursuing a master's in teaching and a TESOL certificate from American University. After working in public school settings for a few years, Salma was offered a position with an international company focused on helping children and young adults around the world learn the English language. Salma packed her suitcase and for the next ten years, she traveled the world, living and teaching in countries such as Bali, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.

After a while, Salma decided it was time to put down roots and remain in one place for more than a year or two. She accepted a position with a school in the Calgary area and immediately felt at home in Alberta. When a colleague told her about an opening with Manhattan Review's Calgary office, she applied and, given her impressive teaching background, she was welcomed to the team with open arms. Salma is a naturally gifted instructor, but she works hard to stay on top of cutting-edge trends in learning, as well as the latest research on the most effective teaching strategies and methodologies. Her students appreciate her extensive experience, as well as her ability to adapt whatever she's teaching to their level of knowledge. When she isn't guiding future college students to TOEFL success, Salma can be found volunteering with elderly ESL students, performing karaoke with friends, and working in her garden during the warm Canadian summer.
