IELTS Prep Courses in Beijing

While the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is generally viewed as an exam more widely required by colleges and universities in the United Kingdom, over the years it has been growing in popularity among English-speaking undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States. The IELTS is increasingly accepted by academic programs around the world looking for non-native English speakers to demonstrate their grasp of and proficiency with the English language. Our professional educators are in high demand, and they have worked to create a specialized test prep method that is both comprehensive and targeted, ensuring nothing is overlooked. They have helped countless students gain admission to top-tier English-speaking colleges and universities, including New York University, Columbia University, MIT, Johns Hopkins University, American University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, the University of Chicago, the University of Southern California, Stanford University, the University of Washington, Northwestern University, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, Oxford University, the University of Cambridge, the University of California at Los Angeles, Princeton University, and elsewhere.

The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.

The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

At Manhattan Review, we are pleased to use our more than 20 years of test prep industry experience to help students just like you prepare for important tests by working to their full potential. Meet a Beijing IELTS Tutor: Alexa T.

Alexa T. was born in Santiago, Chile, but moved to the United States in elementary school when her father was offered a position with a company in Miami. "I was so sad to leave my extended family," she recalls, "but thankfully I went back and spent my summers and most of my school vacations with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins." Alexa loved her South American heritage, from the artwork to the pottery to the beautiful blankets and other items created through traditions that had been passed down through generations. "I remember thinking one day, what will happen to these amazing works of art if younger generations—like myself—don't learn about them and get involved, or at least share their existence with others?" According to Alexa, that's when she knew she wanted to be a documentary filmmaker, preserving the past so it would never be gotten.

Alexa soon began filming her trips to visit family, documenting the process by which they created their art and celebrated their rich cultural heritage. "It turned out I loved filmmaking, and I was so excited to preserve something important, not just to me, but to history." Alexa worked hard during high school, serving as the president of her school's film club, competing on the swim and track teams, and helping to put on events that celebrated Hispanic and Latin American musicians and artists. Alexa's hard work paid off when she was accepted into the world-famous film program at the University of Southern California. "It was a complete dream come true, and I couldn't wait to learn the technicalities of film-making," she smiles.

After graduating from USC, Alexa began submitting her documentaries to film festivals, and she was invited to share her work around the world. She soon began receiving offers from various non-profit organizations to document specific parts of the world, recording the people for posterity and bringing attention to the beauty of rarely visited or difficult to reach places. As Alexa traveled, she realized more and more the importance of the English language and how it opened so many doors and offered unique opportunities for both personal and professional advancement. "Not only did I want to preserve culture, I wanted to help people move forward in their own lives, and helping them learn English seemed like a great way to do that." Alexa returned to school and obtained a Master of Teaching degree from American University before completing a TESOL certificate, as well. She then resumed her traveling and filmmaking but also began teaching English classes both in-person and online, helping those without access to English-speaking instructors learn the language. When Alexa had the chance to work with an organization in Beijing, she was thrilled to move to the dynamic and exciting city, and while she was there, she became familiar with Manhattan Review. When a position for an IELTS and TOEFL instructor opened up, Alexa jumped at the chance to continue her mission of helping others master the English language, and she happily joined the team. Students appreciate her trilingual skills, as well as her ability to break down concepts in ways that make them easy to remember. When she isn't helping students achieve their own English-language success, Alexa is most often editing her latest documentary film project, volunteering at a local school where she teaches pottery and other handcrafts in an afterschool program, or exploring the streets of Beijing with friends, camera in hand.
