ACT Tutoring in Calgary

Are you a Calgary-based student seeking to obtain the highest score possible on the ACT? If you are searching for the most effective and comprehensive way to prepare for this potentially life-changing exam, look no further than the standardized test prep experts at Manhattan Review. In recent years, the ACT has become an increasingly popular test to take when preparing college applications, and in many states the ACT has surpassed the SAT in terms of student preference. When preparing for a test as important as the ACT, many students find that they learn perfectly well in the company of others, viewing their peers' questions or comments as insightful or even inspiring. Other students, however, know they do not perform to their fullest capabilities in a group setting. They worry about slowing the group down or holding them back because they need to work at a slower pace or require additional time to grasp a particular concept. Alternatively, these students may experience frustration once they have mastered a concept but cannot move on until the rest of the group similarly understands the material. If you know you learn best through one-on-one instruction customized to your unique learning needs, consider working with one of the respected and experienced private tutors at Manhattan Review.

The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

Meet a Calgary ACT Tutor: Paul Q.

Paul Q. grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, and credits the long, cold winters for inspiring his love of science. "There was only so much hockey, ice skating, sledding, and skiing I could do," he laughs, "but I also learned really fast that if I was going to stay indoors, I needed to entertain myself because my parents were more than willing to find chores for me to do." Paul always wanted science kits for birthday presents and printed out step-by-step experiment guides he found online. "I loved experiments because I never knew what was going to happen," he shares. "I could change one single variable and the entire result would be different. Science also helped me overcome my fear of failing because scientists never really fail…they just find methods that don't work and use that information to keep searching for things that do work." Paul served as a vice president in his high school's student government, as well as the president of the Chemistry Club, and in addition to participating in drama club, he also volunteered as a student tutor, working with middle grade students to improve their knowledge of science and math.

Paul knew from an early age he wanted to become a science educator, and given the science section on the ACT, it was no surprise he scored higher on that test than the SAT. Paul worked with a private tutor once a week, focusing on the areas he didn't feel quite as strong in, and he appreciated his tutor's ability to meet in-person or online, allowing him to study at times that were most convenient for him. Paul credits his tutor with helping him stay focused and also for teaching him to manage his sense of time, ensuring he paced himself and was able to answer every question. Paul performed exceptionally well on the ACT, and combined with his impressive grades and extracurricular activities, he was accepted to Johns Hopkins University, where he majored in biochemistry. After graduating, Paul completed a master's degree in biology from MIT followed by a master's degree in education from Tufts University before accepting a position as a high school science teacher in Boston's large public school system.

Paul loved working in the classroom and while he was repeatedly offered the chance to assume a more administrative role, he always chose to remain where he could work directly with students. After a few years in Boston, Paul accepted a position at a private high school in Calgary. When a rare opportunity for an ACT tutor opened at Manhattan Review's Calgary office, Paul's colleagues encouraged him to apply, and we couldn't have been happier to welcome him to the team. Paul's patience, first-hand teaching experience, and passion for education are greatly appreciated by his students, and he never fails to receive outstanding reviews from those he works with. When Paul isn't helping future college students prepare for the ACT, he can be found enjoying performance by Theatre Calgary at Prince's Island Park, attending the annual science-and-art-themed Beakerhead festival, and snowboarding with friends in the winter.
