A young sunflower does something most plants cannot: it follows the sun. Through the day its blossom swings slowly from east to west, tracking the light, and through the night it swings back to face east before dawn. Once the plant matures, the swinging stops and the flower settles facing east for good. Biologists have found a reason worth the effort: an east-facing bloom warms faster in the morning sun, and the warmer flowers draw noticeably more visiting bees.
