Most people assume that a desert is defined by heat, a place of dunes shimmering under a hard sun. Scientists, though, classify deserts by a single measure: how little precipitation they receive. By that standard, some of the coldest places on Earth qualify. Antarctica’s vast interior, where snowfall is so scarce that some valleys receive almost no precipitation at all, is in fact the largest desert on the planet.
