Astronomers have long assumed that the rings of dust surrounding young stars are smooth and evenly spread. Using a new array of linked telescopes, Mei-Lin Sato and her team produced the sharpest images yet of one such ring and found it broken into narrow, well-defined bands separated by nearly empty gaps. Sato notes that the gaps fall exactly where an unseen planet's gravity would be expected to sweep material aside. The structure of a ring, she suggests, may quietly record the planets taking shape within it.
