Passage

Experimental particle physics is the practical investigation of the fundamental components of matter and radiation. A crucial tool in the arsenal of the experimental particle physicist is the particle accelerator. The fundamental particles that make up matter can briefly be revealed when matter collides together at speeds close to that of light.

As for Europe, experimental research in the field of particle physics is pursued at a number of international centers, where hundreds of physicists from all over the world gather around their huge spectrometers at accelerators capable of obtaining beams of high-energy particles, exploring the secrets of nature at high energies. Funding, unlike the financially secure American model, is multi-tiered with each injection dependent on the successful conclusion of previous undertakings. Researchers took part in the research of four collaborations: CPLEAR and DELPHI in Geneva, and ARGUS and HERA-B in Hamburg. For the CPLEAR collaboration, 1995 meant the beginning of the harvest after more than five years of collecting data on neutral kaon decays. At the same time, the introduction of a new tracking chamber in the early stage of the trigger enabled the team to double the amount of useful data in the last year of data-collecting. Hybrid circuits for the readout electronics have been manufactured, and assembly of the double-sided modules has started with the aim of being ready for insertion into the spectrometers by the end of 1999.
