Passage

Every other week two neighbors climb the stairs to a spare room above the barber shop and turn on a microphone. They record a podcast about the history of the block. The host, a librarian who loves old photographs, invites longtime residents to tell their stories. Last winter she handed the microphone to my brother and 1 I, and we talked about the corner where we grew up.

The guests are the heart of the show. The oldest resident on the 2 block, remembers the corner store that once stood there. The collection of old recordings 3 grow with every episode. Each week the hosts choose a theme, gather a few guests, and 4 posting the finished episode online. 5

The early episodes were rough. The hosts 6 have recorded them on a borrowed phone before they bought real equipment. Once they added a good microphone, the sound came out 7 good. Listeners noticed the difference right away.

A good interview consists 8 in more than a list of dates. The best guests tell small, vivid 9 stories, a single memory can bring a whole decade to life. The hosts have learned to ask open questions and then to listen. A long pause, they found, often comes just before the best story.

At first only a handful of people listened. 10 Therefore, some evenings the host wondered whether anyone was tuning in at all. The hosts wanted to reach more neighbors11 so they began sharing each episode at the library. Every two weeks the hosts post a new episode online12, doing this on a regular twice-monthly basis.

The archive now holds dozens of voices from the neighborhood. The podcast has earned 13 it’s place on the block. Newcomers play the old episodes to learn where they live, and the guests hear their own stories saved for good. 14 What began as two neighbors and a borrowed phone has become a living record of the block. 15
