Passage

On clear nights a small group gathers on a flat rooftop above the block to look at the sky. They call themselves the backyard astronomy club. The neighbor 1 whom started the club, a retired science teacher, set up the first telescope on a folding table. The 2 members notebooks fill quickly with sketches of the moon and the planets.

Each meeting has a simple rhythm. The club brings three things to every 3 session, a telescope, a printed star chart, and a thermos of cocoa. The list of bright stars visible from the roof 4 change with the season. A member sets up the tripod, aligns the finder scope, and 5 is focusing the lens before the others arrive. 6

Beyond the last house lies an open field. The member7, which keeps the club’s records also runs the meetings. On the darkest nights the club walks out to 8 it. Carrying red flashlights so their eyes stay adjusted. The short hike is worth the deeper black of the country sky.

Newcomers are often fascinated 9 with how much the telescope reveals. Peering through the eyepiece, 10 the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter come into view. The faint band of the Milky Way stretches overhead on the clearest nights. Even the youngest members learn the names of the brighter stars.

For its first season the club met only when the sky was perfectly clear. 11 Therefore, the members grew bolder and began meeting on partly cloudy nights too. Clouds can hide the faint objects12 but the moon and the bright planets still show through gaps. Word of the club spread, and new faces appear on the roof each month.

The club keeps a shared logbook of everything it sees. Beginners learn to find their way among the constellations, and longtime members 13 find fainter targets. 14 What started as one telescope on a folding table has grown into a standing invitation to look up. 15
