Smart Business Talk – Useful Workplace Slang & Idioms

In our October 3 InFocus newsletter, we outlined our new Smart Business Talk course. With the first session starting on Dec 2, Sunday, at 10 am New York Time, we would like to provide you another in-depth review of the course content!

Being able to speak the everyday slang and idioms used in a typical business setting can make a vast difference when you communicate with your English-speaking colleagues. If someone tells you that you might be “called on the carpet” by the department head, do you know what is coming? How about telling a team member that any extra work on the same project will yield marginal value? Try to use the phrase “gild the lily”. Then the person will know where you stand on all those last-minute frenetic formatting changes on a pitch book. If you need “another pair of eyes” on your work product, someone will be happy to help you out without assuming a supervisory role. When you are asked for opinions, maybe you just want to offer your “two-cents”, as a valuable team player, not an over-bearing micro-manager. If you don’t wish to continue arguing about minor issues, it is time for you to stop “splitting hairs.” The good news is you will get plenty of those interesting usages in just a few minutes. Your expert instructors will walk you through phrases such as working “hand in glove”, “loss leaders”, and many more.

Since we are having fun playing with slang and idioms, we need to ask ourselves what we are trying to achieve by mastering all these fun expressions. There are some fast and easy conclusions.

First, unnecessary misunderstanding and confusion can be minimized. If a colleague blurbs some compliments or complaints to you, you will understand what they mean immediately. Moreover, if a client intersperses his remarks with those informal expressions on an important professional occasion, you may possibly “get a handle on” the feelings and connotations within a split second. That way you are in a much more informed position to formulate your response. Your sharp comments will surely enable you to leave a lasting impressive image with your team members.

Second, professional productivity and camaraderie can be greatly enhanced. It will result in a much more pleasant work environment and team chemistry. You will no longer be frustrated with scratching your head during a meeting and trying to catch up on the discussions while pretending that you understand everything perfectly.

Lastly, you will enjoy the vividness and efficiency of the English language on a daily basis. These colloquial expressions have been developed through time, traveling from interesting paths within various contexts, including real-life experiences and literal sources. It is amazing how few words can mean so much.

To master all the expressions quickly and effectively, learn from our expert instructors real-time and start to use them today! Your efforts will soon bear fruits!

Recent Student GMAT Score

Date: November 23, 2006

I took the GMAT yesterday and got......680 (unofficial score)

Needless to say I am delighted, if somewhat stunned. I never thought I'd score 100 points higher than last time around. My maths improved the most (from 32nd percentile to 56th percentile) and I was in the 95th percentile in my verbal.

If I'd had a few more weeks I'm sure I could have improved my maths score even more, but I'm happy with 680. Thanks for all your help and the excellent classes. They really were invaluable and worth every minute.
