The exact value of "competitive" SAT scores depends on the specific schools an undergraduate applicant wishes to attend. Our hypothetical applicant would be competitive at an institution such as the City University of New York's Baruch College, which reports median SAT scores for accepted students of about 630 EBRW and 665 math. At Boston University, sectional scores of 650 each would be in the lowest quartile of accepted students, while at Brown University, the vast majority of successful applicants received significantly higher scores. With a 1300 total SAT score, our applicant would have a good chance of acceptance to CUNY and an outside shot at Boston University, but extremely long odds at Brown.

Meet a Pretoria SAT Tutor: Glenn S.
Glenn S. has a total of nine years of experience teaching SAT prep courses and private tutoring in Boston, New York, and Pretoria. He is an honors graduate of Boston University, with a bachelor's degree in education, and he also holds a master of arts in teaching from the University of Southern California. He joined Manhattan Review's Pretoria team of SAT teachers in 2015, and has developed a strong reputation as a highly effective SAT instructor.
Glenn's SAT students have been accepted to the most selective American universities, including several Ivy League schools, elite public institutions (also known as the "Public Ivies"), and liberal arts colleges. When he's not teaching SAT prep, Glenn is a faculty member at a secondary school in the Pretoria area. Originally from New York City, he is a fan of the New York Rangers.
