Leonard attended Duke University, where he studied Asian and African Language and Literatures and History. He graduated from this Durham, North Carolina school and proceeded to graduate school at Yale University in Oklahoma, matriculating with his PhD in History. He continued as an Al-Bukhari Fellow in the History of Islam in Southeast Asia at Oxford. Then he joined the Faculty of History at University of Oxford, as his education culminated in superlative teaching opportunities. Leonard speaks English, Indonesian, Chinese, and Arabic. Always a gifted student, this educator has a special skill for connecting with students and sharing ideas.
