Aggregate data on GRE test-takers are available from Educational Testing Service, the exam's administrator. According to the latest statistics, mean scores over the last three testing years (covering about 1.7 million test administrations) were approximately 150 verbal, 153 quantitative, and 3.55 analytical writing. These average scores can fluctuate considerably, depending on the academic discipline that the test-taker intends to study in graduate school. Prospective arts and humanities majors, for instance, average 156 (the 73rd percentile) on the GRE's verbal section, and those seeking to enter graduate engineering programs have a mean quantitative score of 159 (the 70th percentile). In short, the setting of student score goals must begin with a detailed understanding of test-taker performance in a subject-specific context. From this point, students must then evaluate the score expectations of their chosen graduate programs, which are likely to be higher than even these subject-specific averages. At Manhattan Review, we assist our students in the setting of score goals that align with their intended graduate school pursuits.
