Default Caribou Question

Caribou are wary animals with excellent hearing, so stalking them over the treeless landscape, getting close enough to kill it with nothing but a handheld lance, as Dorset people did, required exceptional hunting skill.

(A) so stalking them over the treeless landscape, getting close enough to kill it

(B) so to stalk them over the treeless landscape and get close enough to kill one

(C) so in order to stalk them over the treeless landscape and get close enough to kill one

(D) and so in order to stalk it over the treeless landscape, getting close enough to kill it

(E) and so stalking them over the treeless landscape and getting close enough in order to kill it

JEM or Bobotek, why C is wrong? What is difference between "In order to" and "to" is there some rule that should be used here?

Tets

Tets,

C is wrong because it treats the prepositional phrase "in order to" as a subject, which is ungrammatical. However, verbs in the infinitive form can be treated as subjects. Take a simple example: "To eat requires food."

i am not quite clear about what GEL meant when he said the prepositional pharase 'in order to' is being treated as the subject..could you explain this in greater detail....and do consider examples such as -in order to win,we must prepare well; she must exercise in order to loose weight.....and comment on their grammatical validity....thanks
