Is the range of a non-empty set S bigger than its mean?
1. All members of S are negative
2. The median of set S is negative

why explanation says: From S_2 it follows that the range of S is bigger than the largest element in S. how do we know that?

Remember that range is equal to x - y , where x is the greatest element and y is the smallest. The median of S is negative, so y<0 and x - y > x
