University applicants are advised to review ACT policies and statistics on all of the schools they wish to attend. Vanderbilt University will serve as an example of the important data points. This institution ranks standardized testing as a "very important" factor in admissions decisions (this is the highest possible category). Vanderbilt requires either the SAT or the ACT, but more than two-thirds (67.2%) chose the latter in the most recent admissions cycle. The average ACT composite score at Vanderbilt was about 33.5, with 91% of accepted students receiving scores of 30 or higher. The reported mean ACT sectional scores for first-year Vanderbilt students were approximately 32.5 math, 33.5 English, and 9 writing. These high ACT standards match other academic expectations at Vanderbilt, where the mean high school GPA is 3.80 and over 85% of students were in the top tenth of their high school graduating class. Students studying for the ACT must ultimately be prepared to receive ACT scores that correlate to an institution's degree of selectivity.
